Start now by taking pictures on special events such as weddings, birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving and many other celebrations wherein every member of the clan could get together. Write on a journal special dates and events so you will remember them and keep the stories behind the years in your life.
The most important step to keeping your family history is to decide now. Don't decide tomorrow or next week, decide that you will preserve your family history now and coordinate with your kids as to how you can make it a remarkable family activity.
